Nadal beats Federer

My interest in tennis has developed since last 6-7 months, courtesy Polka, my previous flatmate, who used to watch all the tennis matches, gave me an initial intro on players , their rankings etc. and since then, I have followed 3 grand slams; Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and ATP Masters series.

I respect Federer for his game, he definitely has panache but I love Nadal for his fighting spirit. That guy does put his everything into the game. The saga of this year’s Wimbledon’s men’s single has been quite remarkable. Initially, I was thinking Djokovic will beat Federer with final being played between Nadal and Djokovic but then yaa I guess people are right when they say Federer is Federer.

In the final, I was seriously hoping that Nadal wins, I mean yes Federer’s game is awesome, he has won Wimbledon 5 times and if he would have won it this time, he would have broken Bjorn Borg’s record of five consecutive wins at Wimbledon. But still I wanted Nadal to win as I just admire his efforts. Again he couldn’t convert the game in three match points, an initial lead of 2-0, with game going on for close to five hours but the guy fought, fought, fought and just went on fighting and WON…..

As soon as he won, he lied down on the court completely and then, the way he hugged Federer portrayed so many emotions; respect, happiness, consolation. I don’t know why do we personally attach ourselves so much to the sports and feel elation or sadness based on a player’s victory or defeat esp. in a tight match. In a practical world, it really doesn’t matter who wins or loses, our life goes on just as usual. Maybe it’s sharing the joy of someone’s victory and appreciating the fact that they won, or it’s just the adrenaline rush as to what will happen, who will win and the whole suspense attached to it or maybe, its just for a change we want from our lives…. I am not sure, but yes someday, I do want to find the precise reason….

HI Ruchira, this is news for me that you too like tennis - try and get hold of some of the five setters of Pet Sampras!
Cheers MS
