‘Sometimes we discover in one single lucid moment what we have been looking for throughout our lives. The point is not to destroy ourselves before that moment arrives.’ – Ivan Klima said in his book ‘No Saints or Angels’. I can agree with this statement. In the nutshell, it means, Hope, that, “that” moment would arrive at some point in time.
However, in the second school of thought, a line from a song by GnR says, ‘I’ve been dragging my heels with a bitch called Hope’. I can agree with this too that we live with the hope that things will get better, carry on with our jobs (or anything) because we are not clear about what we exactly want and it just goes on and on.
During our journey, we keep on discovering new things about ourselves out of the blue but in that quest of self- discovery (which I believe is the most important purpose of the existence), does Hope really play a part that hopefully we would find the answer? No. Somewhere Hope makes us lose touch with reality because while hoping things will get better, we lose on the time in which we could have thought of alternative options or actually worked towards a solution.
At the end of the day, we should just work towards what we think we want without the hope that we will get it or the idea that we won’t. I completely realize the meaning of the saying ‘Just work towards the goal without worrying about the outcome’ now.
The concept of keeping Hope is so forcefully inculcated in us since the birth that I am scared to say, ‘Hope is a hopeless thing.’ As far as the saying of Mr. Ivan Klima goes, we should never ever destroy ourselves, be that ‘moment’ is coming or not. On the other hand, I wouldn’t also say that Hope is a bitch because the infrastructure of the society stands on the concept of Hope. Now the infrastructure of society stands on the concept of Faith too which leads to another line of thought, Is Hope synonymous to Faith? Next time…

Have you watched "Shawshank Redemption", if not, please do watch it...u might get another angle of thinking :)
Hi Jaya,
Yes I have seen the movie. I am not saying that there should be no goal or we should not work towards it but hoping that it will be successful undermines the effort. Hope somewhere is synonymous to illusion. On the other hand, if there is no hope that it will be successful or a fear that it will fail (just 100% effort), would be a better scenario.
Its more like a gamble, we might win, we might lose but both the sides should have an equal weightage. Dufrene too in the movie took a gamble. He tried and won but he might have failed too. It was just a matter of that poster being discovered. And it was sheer effort and guts on his part to take that chance.
I hope that this made some sense... If not, please let me know and we will discuss this further.
Cheers,
Ruchira
hey ruch:
found you on blogger ... kewl!! pretty dramatic post ... interesting all the same. i think there are a thousand lucid moments in lives we look for. as far as "hope" vs "faith" goes ... they are, by definition, different ... faith is belief, well-researched and found acceptable (though im not sure if this definition holds good in this mucked up "real" world we live in anymore). hope is seemingly against reason, the last resort in a circumstance, largely a cry for help, but probably mankind's most definitive facet. whether you work toward whatever you want to achieve or not, cant really shrug this one off ... hehe ... i don't think hope necessarily is (or needs to be) inculcated in people ... it's always there!
"hope" cannot (or is not) expressed in so many words, which is probably why Rush didn't have lyrics on their song "Hope" (Snakes & Arrows, 2007) ... but here is an excerpt from "Faithless" on the same record ...
Rush - Faithless (Snakes & Arrows, 2007):
....
I don't have faith in faith
I don't believe in belief
You can call me faithless
I still cling to hope
And I believe in love
And that's faith enough for me
....
The boys might've proved your point already :) ... ok ... enough unnecessary Rush advertising :) ...
cheerio,
-A
